Established to provide undergraduate scholarships for the children or grandchildren of staff members working in the College of Education and Human Development, this scholarship was named in honor of Peggy J. Ritchey. Peggy retired from a 34-year career at Texas A&M University – 24 of those years as a member of the college’s support staff. Peggy worked persistently to increase recognition of the contribution that support staff make to the overall success of the college and university. She was a charter member of Texas A&M University’s Association for Professional Support Staff, and she helped to establish the college’s Staff Advisory Council and Outstanding Staff Award. This scholarship was established through a lead gift from Dean C. Corrigan, former dean of the college who said “There is no more deserving person to honor with this endowment than Peggy Ritchey on her retirement from Texas A&M University.”

Undergraduate Majors and Incoming Freshman / Transfer Students 

Applicant Eligibility

  • Applicants must be children or grandchildren of a College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) current or retired staff member, which includes all Departments within CEHD, including the Dean’s office (the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development, the Department of Educational Psychology, the Department of Health and Kinesiology and the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture). “Current or retired staff” is defined as CEHD employees who are full-time budgeted regardless of funding source (classified/non-classified) or at least hired for 50% effort. The staff member shall be currently employed with or retired from CEHD at the time the award is distributed and at the time the Fall Semester begins. If not, the award will be rescinded and awarded to another applicant (if applicable).
  • Children/grandchildren of graduate/PhD students currently employed in a staff position are eligible to apply as long as children/grandchildren are pursuing an undergraduate degree. Children/grandchildren of employees with faculty appointments are INELIGIBLE to apply.

Academic and Financial Requirements for Eligibility

  • Applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University in College Station during the period in which the scholarship is awarded.
  • For incoming freshman, admission to A&M is sufficient to be eligible for this scholarship.
  • For transfer students, the applicant must have attained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPR and will be considered on a competitive basis with other applicants. For continuing students, the applicant must have attained at least a 2.50 cumulative GPR at Texas A&M.
  • Applicant must establish financial need by submitting the FAFSA to TAMU Scholarships & Financial Aid (SFA). Those applicants who are considered to have any amount of financial need will be considered in the pool of applicants.

Period of Award

  • The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for one year ($500 fall semester / $500 spring semester).
  • Applicant may be a recipient from a previous year.
  • Since a student’s family resources can decrease or increase significantly during an academic year, the Scholarship Committee requires that each student reestablish financial need each year in which they are applying, maintain a 2.5 GPR, and be enrolled as a full time student (12 semester hours of degree plan course work).

Letters of Reference Requirements (must accompany the application)

  • Incoming Freshman — One reference letter must come from either the high school principal or counselor with information verifying class rank, GPA and SAT/ACT scores. The other letter(s) may come from teachers, coaches, ministers, employers or community leaders who can provide information about the applicant’s character, need for financial assistance, leadership, personal maturity, integrity and professional potential.
  • Continuing Students — at least 2 (two) letters of reference should be from University faculty, staff, and/or administrators. The other may come from teachers, coaches, ministers, employers or community leaders, who can provide information on the applicant’s character, leadership, personal maturity, integrity and professional potential.
  • Transfer Students — at least 2 (two) letters of reference should be from faculty, staff and/or administrators at previous institution(s). The other may come from teachers, coaches, ministers, employers or community leaders, who can provide information on the applicant’s character, leadership, personal maturity, integrity and professional potential.

Process

  • A completed online application form, letters of reference (limit 3) and a current resume shall be emailed to the Chair of the Selection Committee (the current Staff Advisory Council Chair) no later than Tuesday, February 5, 2019.
